   he poured water into the basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and wiped them with the tow- el that was wrapped around him. Then he came to Simon Peter, and Peter asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “You do not know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.” Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus replied, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!” Jesus told him, “One who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed. Apart from that he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and this is why he said, “You are not all clean.” And so, after wash- ing their feet, he put his outer garment back on, and sat down again. He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me, Teacher and Lord, and you say so correctly, for this is what I am. If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you should also wash each other’s feet. I have given you an ex- ample, so that you too would do as I have done to you. Amen, amen, I tell you: a slave is not greater than his master; neither is the one who is sent greater than he who sent him.
