no basis for a charge against him.”The Jews in- sisted, “We have a law, and according to our law, he should die, because he made himself the Son of God.” However, when Pilate heard these words, he was even more afraid. Returning into the Praetorium, he asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pi- late asked him, “Are you not speaking to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and the power to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all against me, un- less were given to you from above. Therefore, he who delivered me to you has a greater sin.” From then on, Pilate tried to release Jesus, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend! Everyone who makes himself speaks against Caesar!” When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement,” and in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.” Now it was the Prep- aration Day of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!” But they shouted, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!” And so, Pilate delivered Jesus to them, to be crucified.
