   Jews!” They struck his head with a reed, spat on him, and bowing their knees, expressed adora- tion to him. After mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own gar- ments on him. Then they led him out to crucify him. Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was then returning from the coun- tryside and passing by. The soldiers compelled him to go with them so that he might carry Je- sus’ cross. And they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha, which means, “The place of a skull.” They offered him wine mixed with myrrh to drink, but he did not take it. Then they cruci- fied him and shared his garments among them, casting lots for them to see what each one would take. It was the third hour when they crucified him. The inscription of his accusation was writ- ten above him, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.” With him, they also crucified two rebels, one on his right hand, and one on his left. The Scripture was fulfilled, which says, “He was numbered with transgressors.” Those who passed by blasphemed him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who would destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save yourself now and come down from the cross!” In the same way, the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking him
