MANUAL HANDLING
Manual handling relates to the moving of items either by lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling.
The weight of the item is an important factor, but many other factors can create a risk of injury, for example the number of times you have to pick uporcarryanitem, thedistanceyouarecarrying it, where you are picking it up from or putting it down (picking it up from the oor, putting it on
a shelf above shoulder level) and any twisting, bending, stretching or other awkward posture you may adopt while doing a task.
To assess risks associated with Manual Handling you should carry out a risk assessment.
The risk assessment should include:
• Observation of the tasks involved in and around the workplace
• Takingintoconsiderationhowmuch lifting and carrying is involved.
It’s sometimes wise to ask employees what they think the hazards are, as they might notice something that you don’t. Once you have identi ed any hazards you need to decide how likely it is for any harm to occur.
Please note that some products within this section may incur additional carriage costs due to size and weight.
