THE URINARY SEDIMENT TODAY
• Mostly performed in central laboratories, which means:
- (too) many samples/day (= tens to hundreds) - mainly for screening purposes
- inadequate methodology and equipment
- far from bedside
• Too often neglected even by nephrologists,although there are today several signs of a renovated interest
• Increasing use of automated instruments (UF1000i, iQ200 & sediMAX), manual microscopy being left for “flagged” or “crowded” samples only
