1630: THE FIRST MICROSCOPIC OBSERVATION OF THE URINE
The history of the urine sediment begins in 1630 with the scholar and polymath Nicolaus Fabricius de Peiresc (1580-1637)
Since he wanted to study the nature of the matter which forms the urinary stones, he investigated with a microscope a “sandy urine” sample in which he found a “heap of rhomboical bricks” of irregular shape
In his view, this finding could explain the pain caused by the passage of the “sandy urine” along the urinary system
