According to Blockchain in Government Tracer, 47 countries are working on 202 blockchain projects, including 11 projects by U.S. federal agencies and 17 projects by state agencies. Federal government agencies are focused on the use of blockchain in the following areas:
• Small business innovations (Department of Energy)
• Healthcare applications, including data innovation and white papers
regarding healthcare applications (Health and Human Services)
• Identity management( Department of Homeland Security)
• Payment processing (Federal Reserve)
• Streamline government contracts (Government Services Administration)
• Creation of federal blockchain forum (GSA)
• Secure messaging platform (DARPA)
• Sharing data between Additive Manufacturing websites (Dept. of the Navy)
• Reinforce supply chains, create connective devices and possibly issue own digital currency (Postal Service)
• Facilitate partnerships between libraries and other organizations to support city of community goals (Institute of Museum and Library Services)
States are pursuing a number of blockchain pilots, such as:
• Smart UCC Filings and corporate shares (Delaware),
• Vital records and health provider registries (Illinois),
• Land title registry (Cook County Recorder of Deeds, IL)
• Academic registries (Texas),
• Legislative studies (Virginia, New York and Colorado)
