 A smarter smart city
QUAYSIDE AND THE EASTERN WATERFRONT
In October 2017, Toronto announced its selection of Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs (Sidewalk) as their partner in creating a smart city test pilot on eastern Toronto’s waterfront. The two organizations have a year to decide which technologies to deploy in the Quayside community and how to finance the project. Sidewalk has committed $50 million on the planning and testing stage of this project, which is scheduled to begin in late 2018. Construction of the project will likely begin in 2019.
Sidewalk plans to transform Quayside community –a 12 acre, blighted and contaminated area once used for shipping trade—into one of the world’s most innovative city neighborhoods. Sidewalk envisions redefining urban life through technology in its first big project into a mixed-use complete community, housing approximately 5,000. Later, Sidewalk’s development could expand to a neighboring 700+ acre parcel of industrial waterfront that could house tens of thousands of residents.
