   THE DISRUPTION REPORT JAMNAURACRHY22001188
Then came ...Metcalfe’s law. ...It means is that the value of a network is equal to the square of all the nodes on the network. Forget about the math—that’s what gave rise to platform companies like Facebook—pause. ...[B]oth those things have profoundly changed business and society.
...[W]e are about at this moment to see that third beginning of an exponential shift. ...[T]ake all that data. You ...add AI to it and that’s what I mean by you get exponential learning. ...[Y]our ultimate competitive advantage is you out learn everybody else.
...[M]aybe it’ll be called Watson’s law one day. ...The corollary to that law is that, contrary to conventional wisdom out there, in this era many can win—many, not just a few companies. If you ask why, the answer is the data. Now why do I say that?
...How much of the world’s data is searchable? ...It is 20%. So who’s got the other 80%? You do. The other 80% is yours—it is your history, it’s customers, it’s underwriting, it’s nancials. And it’s that data that leads to that really exponential learning, married with lots of data. And I really would like you to remember a phrase. It makes you the incumbent disrupter...
...If you step back, ...I hope it tells you a tale of three in ection points—it’s an in ection point about your business, ...an in ection point about society and an in ection point really for IBM too.
...As a disruptor I want you to also think about going on the offense ...[which] means you are the one in the lead. ...I think you’re gonna do three things. ...The rst you will leverage digital [and learning] platforms—plural. ...You’ll embed learning in every process you run. And third you are going to empower people with all forms of digital intelligence. This will be an era of man plus machine not an era of man versus machine.
...It’s all about about you changing the way the world works. So let me put kind of a period on that chapter about an in ection point for business. It gives you this wonderful chance to grow and learn exponentially. But there’s something else I want to talk about. This also leads to— and it’s why we say it’s an in ection point for society—I can’t have this conversation without also covering this. Because this world the data. There are two things I know about it. One, it will be the greatest opportunity of our time. But it has the potential to be the greatest issue of our time.
