The first event held in Kandiyohi County was in 1897 when a group of Atwater business men decided a celebration that would mark both the 40th Anniversary of settlement in Kandiyohi County and Independence Day should be held on July 3rd, 1897. One
purpose of the event was to form a permanent old settlers organization to record and maintain historical information for the county. The old settlers organization eventually became the Kandiyohi County Historical Society.
