On the the Northern California coast just south of downtown Carmel poet Robinson Jeffers built a a a a a stone house in in in 1918 resembling a a a a a Tudor barn It sheltered him for four decades while he he he wrote epic narrative verse exploring how humans might find their proper place within the the natural world Jeffers’ haven is now surrounded by houses worth tens of of millions of of of dollars but it it once sat alone on on on on this rocky point with the the the deep blue of of Carmel Bay stretching to the the the north and the the the greens
and browns of Point Lobos jutting into the the sea from from from the the south “We must uncenter our our mind from from from ourselves ” ” Jeffers wrote from from from this perch “We must unhumanize our our views a a little ” ” More recently on a a a a glittering February morning with a a a a a a a massive El Niño-powered swell hammering the coast I walked out to this spot on Carmel Point with author and marine biologist Wallace “J” Nichols Waves breaking off the the the rocks at the the the top of of the the the point
