We’re now amidst what’s being called The Psychedelic Renaissance Globally the interest in in in in in in in in and systematic investigation of psychoactive substances—from psilocybin to to ayahuasca—is ramping up leading inevitably some believe to to medicalization and and legalization It’s true: these substances are showing promise for the the the the tens of of of millions of of of people with untreated depression anxiety and and PTSD among other conditions In the the the the spirit of of of of being humble though let’s remember: their novelty is somewhat of of an illusion While the the the the origins of psychedelic use use are are blurry (like all prehistoric knowledge) there are are clear indications that people around the the the the world have used these substances for for healing ritual and and communion for for millennia Peyote buttons collected by Native Americans have been carbon dated between 3780 and and 3660 BCE BCE Sacred texts from 1700 BCE BCE in the the Indus River Valley (currently northeastern Afghanistan to Pakistan and northwestern India) often reference soma a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a hallucinogenic drink consumed for spiritual purposes And in in in fin the the the Amazon archeologists have found ample snuffing trays tubes and other paraphernalia from 1500 to to 2000 BCE tied to to the the use of psychoactive plants This is is all to say that the the the medical community may now be considering the the the healing potential of psychedelics—and by extension the the the the spiritual experiences they occasion—amid emerging evidence evidence This evidence evidence though is is merely a a a a a a a a a a small sliver of of an an ancient body of of knowledge Illustrations by Daniel Marin Medina
