Early convertible top hydraulics (up to VIN 037189) were lled with uid that proved problematic if not changed every ve
years or so. The uid can solidify and wreak havoc with seals and other delicate components. If leaks develop after ushing the
uid, the only solution is to rebuild the entire system, which is obviously not an inexpensive proposition.
Jaguar claimed XK8 automatic transmissions were “sealed for life” and required no maintenance, but a ush every 50,000 miles
will go a long way toward prolonging transmission life. Ensure the work is done by a specialist using the correct uid, however.
If unusual front tire wear is present, have the front suspension inspected by an expert. Upper shock mounts and upper control
arm bushings are common culprits, but other components may be suspect as well.
Finally, the rather complex and fragile center console cup holder can su er in insensitive hands. Luckily an inexpensive
aftermarket version is now available.

any parts for the Jaguar V-8 are engine-number-speci c,
such as timing chain tensioners. Unfortunately, Jaguar elect-
ed to place the engine number in a less-than obvious loca-
tion. We hope the diagram below will shed some light on the
situation.
Standing at the front of the car, the engine number is located
just aft and to the right of the water pump, or just to the right of
the thermostat housing. The numbers are formed by a series of
dots punched into the front of the engine block.
