Caresse Balentien Hooi wanted to
become a teacher ever since she
can remember, but since her mom
is a TV host, she has always loved
this business, too. At the age of 22,
she stood in front of the classroom for

Caresse started working right after
she graduated. When she was only
22, she already stood in front of a
classroom with many children from
troubled families. Some were hungry,
others misunderstood, or even worse.
“I listened to them, and if they were
hungry, I brought them sandwiches.
One day I took them to McDonalds,
because they’d never been there. It
was beautiful to see the smiles on
their faces, but it was also hard, be-
cause I couldn’t do more.”
After four years, Caresse and the

almost twenty years later, she still

Both men used to practice swimming themselves along with training
other teams. They both always had the idea of starting their own team,
someday, so they could teach swimming and perhaps teach their mem-
bers other activities and sports the way they thought was best. After
Rudsel came back to Curaçao from the Netherlands, they founded Orca
Swim Club Curaçao.
In the past, when they used to train kids from different teams, they never
heard of a team called Orca. “An orca has strength, it’s heavy and mas-
sive, which are the qualities that we want. It’s a killer whale,” says Vernon
Toré. They like to think of themselves as orcas, picturing themselves
having strong characteristics like the killer whale. That is why they chose

patience, waiting to grow their team. “We started training the kids that
we had at that time. Now we have 70 to 80 members in Orca Swim Club
Curaçao, which includes kids as well as adults. Some of them have been
with us since the day we started. There are even some that left and re-
turned, after some time.”
