Boccanegra” Verdi. The program also included choruses and overtures from opera composi ons by Verdi. The female members of the orches- tra and choir had to perform in headscarves. It was also impossible to broadcast the concert due to the prohibi on in Iran of showing musical instruments on TV. It was only in Italy, in Ravenna, where the historical event could be recorded and broadcast two days later with the same programme and with the same Iranian – Italian musicians in the huge hall in the Palazzo Mauro de André, with the audience enthusias cally accep ng the project.
Riccardo Mu summed up his “Friendship Roads” route to the East:
“I visited Tehran with great admira on and love for the Iranian people. I come from a country with powerful cultural tradi ons, the history of which is more than 2000 years. The cultural history of Iran also dates back thousands of years. And I think that countries with such a long history can easily establish contact. With our project we want to demonstrate that we are all on the same land, that it does not ma er which country, religion or race people belong to - with the help of music we can feel like brothers and sisters. And our choice of the program in Tehran - Verdi, was correct. Because Verdi’s music is the absolute embodiment of the Italian spirit and at the same me it is universal music - the hearts and ideals of people, their pain, their love. Verdi is understood everywhere - in China, Australia, South America, Korea, Tehran. And in order to build the “Roads of Friendship” to Iran, we had to bring Verdi’s music.”
By the way:
With the music of Verdi, Riccardo Mu has a new educa onal project. Since last year the Maestro has been conduc ng an Italian Opera Acade- my for young conductors in Ravenna. The training lasts 2 weeks and includes open rehearsals of the Maestro with the conductors chosen by him for the compe on. This year from 1 to 14 September at the Alighieri Theatre, Mu will teach how to perform Verdi’s “Aida”.
Riccardo Mu : “For many years I’ve been working on making Verdi’s music understandable, clearing it and removing that “heaviness” that bad conductors and singers give it. We are accustomed to the fact that cri cs praise the spiritual fullness of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Wagner, Mahler, and Italian composers describe them as entertaining, pleasant, but without any spiritual meaning. It is necessary to correct this error. That’s why it was important for me to create the Italian Opera Academy. My work at the academy helps to restore the best musical tradi ons.
“My teacher was Antonio Vo o, and he was a student of Arturo Toscanini. I think that their powerful lesson of conduc ng should be passed on to new genera ons.”
