AN OBJECT REFLECTS
Before I was a piece of art, I could see through anyone—
posed or poser. Saucy, jaunty arms did not dissuade me
but then you made me into something more or less—your gaze
dividing us took me
piece by piece,
my shoulders, arms, back,
dissected into shadows, angles, outward lines
you recomposed and framed
as you would have me be. What shock to be relieved of outward sight, what gift
to only see inside.
This poem based on the accompanying painting won first prize in the South Dakota Poetry Society Ekphrastic Poetry Contest, 2009.
