PRO TIPS: HIGH VOLTAGE
Three things to consider when switching to an electric car
1. CHARGING LOGISTICS
If you can plug your car in overnight, you’ll wake up every morning to a full tank of, well, electricity. Having a garage or driveway is best, but installing an outlet should be possible in condos too, assuming your neighbours are amenable. A regular 110-volt outlet won’t really cut it though; for best results use a 240-volt outlet or, even better, a dedicated wall-mounted EV charger.
2. YOUR DRIVING HABITS
Do you really need 500 kilometres of range? Range anxiety — the fear you might run out of juice — is very real for new EV owners. But veteran EV drivers often say that initial anxiety tends to fade over time. While people tend to focus on range, it shouldn’t be your sole criterion when choosing an EV, especially if it’ll be your second or third vehicle. Buy what you like.
3. ROUTE PLANNING
Planning a road trip in an EV isn’t the headache it once was. For one thing, the infrastructure is growing every year. You also don’t need to download five different apps to use five different charging networks anymore. Most EVs make it easy to find charging stations along your route using the in-car nav. Google Maps now offers route directions for EVs too. It’s never been so easy to make the switch to electric.
5 FUTURE COLLECTIBLES
Every year, the classic car specialists at Hagerty Insurance publish a “Bull Market List” of 10 vehicles they think are poised to become valuable collectibles. A word of warning: this is no crystal ball or get-rich-quick scheme for car flippers. Instead, it’s a list of great cars that you’ll appreciate driving, while (fingers crossed) they appreciate in value. Here are our favourites (all values are in USD, as estimated by Hagerty):
1990 Ferrari Testarossa. This is a very rare thing: an icon of ’80s excess that still looks good today. Price new: $164,950. Value now: $100,000.
2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Beautifully designed and just as beautiful to drive. Eminently usable. Price new: $110,000. Value now: $50,000.
2010 Lexus LFA. The one and only Lexus supercar has a V10 engine that revs to the moon. Price new: $350,000. Value now: $550,000.
2006 Ford GT. A big V8 motor and a stick shift. One for all the Ford vs. Ferrari fantasists out there. Price new: $150,000. Value now: $350,000.
1997 Toyota Land Cruiser. Tough as nails. It’s a classic SUV that’ll happily take you anywhere. Price new: $41,000. Value now: $30,000.
