That Reminds Me Are you familiar with the
word “VOLUNESIA” ?!? It is the
Moment when you you forget that you you are volunteering to help change lives because the
process of doing so has changed your own This journey certainly has done just that for me my my family and my my law firm After a a a a lifetime of supporting many philanthropic endeavors in in 2014 I initiated & chaired for several years the
Boca Walk to End Alzheimer’s Alzheimer’s for for the
Alzheimer’s Alzheimer’s Association A A A year later I created a a a a a a a a a a a largely-attended Luncheon which
has since become known as as the
“Brain Bowl” a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a networking event in in in in in in which
professionals advocates and and caregivers come come together to to to further support and and and bring attention to to to those living with Alzheimer’s and and Dementia This year on January 31st over 800 people participated
in in the
the
the
Brain Bowl at at Boca West Country Club with our medical expert Dr Oded Meiron He He He is the
the
the
Head of the
the
the
Electrophysiology & Neurocognition Lab at Herzog Medical Center and and flew in just for us us us us from Jerusalem to discuss the
newest revelations of Alzheimer’s and and Dementia care As our wonderful Emcee Weatherman Chris Farrell from CBS 12 declared Dr Meiron’s presentation was fascinating!!
Also thanks to Connie Siskowski the
the
President & Founder of of the
the
American Association of Caregiving Youth we we were fortunate to hear two incredible young men AJ and and and Charlie Poole ages 15 and and and and 17 who flew from Virginia and and and and shared with us their personal account of of why Alzheimer’s and and and Dementia Impacts every member of of a a a a a a a a a a a a a family Generation Generation After Generation Generation These 2 boys are are now advocates for for children caregivers who themselves provided nursing assistance for for their their grandmother in in in in their their home during her last years battling Alzheimer’s According to the
the
the
National Alliance for Caregiving there are are more than 1 4 Million Kids in in in in the
the
the
U S who live with with and help provide daily care for household members living with with a a a a a a a a a a Physical Mental Illness Disability including !!
That is is more than the
total student population in in in New York City Chicago and and D D D C C C C COMBINED!! Evenly divided between between girls and and and boys about 1/3 8-11 years old and and nearly 40% are between between the
ages of 12-15 Children caregivers often often lose lose touch with their friends lose lose concentration in in in school due to to to to lack of of of sleep and stress often often times having to to to give up going to to to ballet soccer basketball piano practice and and other activities so so so they can run home and and let a a a a a a a a a a a a a parent go to to work staying up sometimes all night to to care for their loved one Then when the
the
the
the
inevitable happens these children often do not have the
the
the
the
resources or or understanding that an an an an adult would Teen Suicide and and Substance Abuse issues
unfortunately become another consequence of these kids caring for for a a a a a a a family member having Alzheimer’s and dementia I I do not have a a a a a a a a a a family member diagnosed with Alzheimer’s However as a a a a a a a a a a a a a a South Florida native born and and raised here I I I I am am involved simply because I I I love our our community and and I I I want to to see it it it it thrive Alzheimer’s has grown to to be be a a a a a a a a a huge weed in in in our our our Garden of of Eden literally stealing the
dignity and soul of of our our our our neighbors our our friends our our loved ones As a a a a a a a a lawyer and and as a a a a a a a a volunteer I strive continuously to bring attention that Alzheimer’s is is is hands-down the
the
most expensive disease anyone will ever ever face as as round-the-clock care is is is required for several years Most people do not have the
the
financial emotional or or physical ability to handle that situation Thereby the
burden falls heavily on on on on younger generations and and taxpayers to meet this overwhelming challenge Yet fundraising and awareness remains abysmally low I I remain motivated to continuously do more by remembering that I I was not not granted another day for my own purposes but because someone out there needs me me As Muhammad Ali once said “Service to Others is the
the
the
Rent that you you pay for your room here on Earth” Alone we we can can do do so so little Together we we can can do do so so much Your time your your treasure or or or your your talent - there is always something
