READING
1127 Reading
This seventh grade course will develop and strengthen the students’ ability to analyze literary and informational texts, with a focus on developing a lifelong love of reading. Students will explore an extensive variety of genres through structured and independent reading, including poetry, drama, short stories, articles, essays, speeches, and novels. Emphasis will be placed on teaching students to read critically, extending beyond surface-level comprehension into text-dependent analysis, with a focus on the author’s purpose and craft.
ADVANCED READING
1147 Advanced Reading
The Advanced Reading course is designed to grow and challenge students who are talented in both writing and reading. The structure of this course assumes a strong understanding and mastery of the previous year’s ELA content. This course encourages students who are excellent writers and avid independent readers to use their advanced level skills to further their understanding of text-dependent analysis. Students will read high-level classic and contemporary literature using anchor texts with emphasis on independent reading. The depth of analysis into text is greater and follows a faster pace. Advanced Reading is recommended for strong independent readers and writers who are self-motivated and able to meet the rigor and demands of the course.
Students enrolled in the Advanced Reading course are also concurrently enrolled in the Advanced English course. Placement in the advanced curriculum is determined by a rubric that includes the following: teacher recommendation/evaluation, standardized test scores, and grades. Students must demonstrate a strong work ethic and interest in writing, language, and reading.
