STUDENT LIFE

Oklahoma History
Outside the Classroom
Learning about Oklahoma is very
interesting, but sometimes students need
more than lectures, discussions, and
homework to keep them interested. To this end, students in Coach Estep’s class took a field trip on Route 66 and created performances about notorious Oklahomans.
The students’ first stop on the field trip was QuikTrip, where they learned that the chain started in Tulsa in 1958 and spread to other states. Then, they took a drive down Route 66 and visited the Cyrus Avery Plaza (Southwest Blvd. at Riverside Dr.) Cyrus Avery is the “father of Route 66;” he is the man responsible for bringing the famous highway
to Oklahoma and Tulsa. Additional points of interest along the route included the famous Meadow Gold sign, Ike’s Chili House, Oaklawn Cemetery, and the roundabout entering downtown Tulsa.
For the performances, each student researched a famous Oklahoman, or someone who made a mark on Oklahoma, and wrote a short biography on that person. The students then organized into groups
of four or five and performed skits,
acting as the people they wrote about. Some of the people researched were Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Russell Westbrook, Jim Thorpe, and Paul Harvey.
