Située à Ménerbes, la maison Dora MAAR est une propriété d’exception du XVIIIe siècle, offrant de très beaux volumes, un jardin paysagé et de superbes vues sur la vallée nord du Luberon. A l’origine édi ée par le Général Baron Robert, l’un des généraux de Napoléon, cette maison fut offerte à Dora MAAR par Pablo PICASSO comme cadeau de rupture en 1944. Pendant près de 10 ans, Dora MAAR fut la compagne et la muse du célèbre peintre.
Dora MAAR posséda la maison jusqu’à sa mort en 1997, puis la propriété fut rachetée par un américain de Houston, déjà propriétaire d’un hôtel particulier très emblématique à Ménerbes. Il avait comme projet de transformer les lieux en maison d’artistes a n qu’écrivains, savants, etc. y trouvent une retraite artistique.
En 2006, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) commence à diriger ce projet, maintenant nommé « Le Programme des Boursiers de la Fondation Brown à la Maison Dora Maar ».
Le programme offre des stages d’1 à 3 mois pour les professionnels des arts et des sciences humaines, a n qu’ils se concentrent sur leurs champs d’expertise. Pour devenir boursier, il faut répondre aux critères suivants : être artiste ou universitaire à mi carrière avec une réputation établie, et être engagé à un niveau professionnel dans les arts et ou l’humanitaire.

L ocated in Menerbes, the Dora Maar house is an exceptional 18th century Bastide with lovely high ceilings, manicured French gardens and magni cent views of the north Luberon valley. Originally built by Général Baron Robert, one of Napoleon’s well-decorated generals in the Republican Army, this house was given to Dora Maar by Pablo Picasso as a gift after their seperation in 1944.
Dora Maar owned the house until her death in 1997, when a resident of both Ménerbes, France and Houston,Texas, purchased the house and began a ve-year rehabilitation project to update the spacious, but decaying residence and gardens.
The new owner’s vision was to create a place for scholars, artists, and writers, to use as a retreat where they could work undisturbed on their art, research for writing periods ranging from one to three months. To help accomplish her goal, in 2006 she asked the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (MFAH), to direct her new project, now called The Brown Foundation Fellow Program at the Dora Maar House and to focus on the creative aspects of their work. To be eligible for the fellowship certain criteria needs to be met, one being an outstanding midcareer professional in the arts and humanities.
The scholarship program provides the artists with a bedroom, private bathroom, working space, roundtrip tickets and transportation to the Dora Maar house and a grant depending on length of stay. The residents share the kitchen, library, living room, dining area and the garden.
