La santé d’Augustine étant fragile, les Pagnol louent avec l’oncle Jules une maison dans les collines, la fameuse Bastide Neuve au-delà du petit village de La Treille, entre Aubagne et Allauch. Le jeune Marcel y passe des vacances mémorables en famille et avec son ami rencontré dans les collines, Lili des Bellons. C’est le paradis de l’enfance simple et heureuse au pied du Garlaban que Pagnol racontera avec nostalgie dans ses Souvenirs d’enfance.
A precocious child and the eldest of four siblings, Marcel grew up in the streets of the port city and studied at Thiers high school where he obtained his baccalaureate before becoming a student in Aix-en-Provence.
Augustine's health being fragile, the Pagnol family rented with their uncle Jules a house in the hills, the famous Bastide Neuve beyond the small village of La Treille, between Aubagne and Allauch. The young Marcel spent memorable vacations there with his family and with his friend he had met in the hills, Lili des Bellons. It was the paradise of a simple and happy childhood at the foot of the Garlaban hill, which Pagnol would nostalgically recount in his Souvenirs d'enfance novel.

MARCEL PAGNOL ET LE THÉÂTRE
Nommé enseignant à Paris quelques années plus tard, Marcel Pagnol décide de quitter l’Education Nationale en 1927 pour se consacrer entièrement au théâtre.
Dramaturge rapidement reconnu avec Topaze et rendu célèbre en 1929 avec Marius, il célèbre sa Provence natale, Marseille, ses couleurs et ses accents dans des vaudevilles modernes qui tous sont acclamés à Paris
Le comédien le plus connu de la « bande à Pagnol », c’est bien sûr Raimu, Jules Muraire, lui aussi marseillais « exilé » dans la capitale. Au cinéma, il deviendra l’inoubliable César. Sa mort en 1946 est un choc pour Pagnol, inconsolable : « On ne peut pas faire de discours sur la tombe d’un père, d’un frère, d’un ls, tu étais pour moi les trois à la fois : je ne parlerai pas sur ta tombe ».
Parmi les dèles, il y a aussi Fernandel à qui Pagnol offre de très beaux rôles, dont le très émouvant Panisse dans la trilogie Marius, Fanny et César.

Le théâtre a rendu Marcel Pagnol célèbre, le cinéma va le consacrer.
Pagnol a toujours su saisir les occasions de vivre « la grande aventure », initiée dans les collines provençales de sa jeunesse. Il choisit de renoncer aux planches pour se lancer dans un genre à peine

Appointed teacher in Paris a few years later, Marcel Pagnol decided to leave the French National Education in 1927 to devote himself entirely to theater.
A playwright who was quickly recognized with Topaze and made famous in 1929 with Marius, he celebrated his native Provence, Marseille, its colors and accents in modern vaudevilles that were all acclaimed in Paris.
The best-known actor of the "Pagnol gang" is of course Raimu, Jules Muraire, also from Marseille, "exiled" to the capital. In the cinema, he was to become the unforgettable César. His death in 1946 was a shock for Pagnol, who was inconsolable: "we cannot make speeches on the grave of a father, a brother, a son, you were for me all three at once: I will not speak on your grave".
Among the faithful, there was also Fernandel to whom Pagnol offered some very beautiful roles, including the very touching Panisse in the Marius, Fanny and César trilogy.
