Current Asthma Guidelines

Anti-inflammatory Reliever (AIR) and SMART/MART (Single Maintenance and Reliever Therapy) are the standards of care for asthmatics. AIR is the use of inhaled corticosteroid and short-acting beta agonist (ICS- SABA) or ICS- Formoterol to provide quick relief of asthma symptoms with a small amount of inhaled corticosteroid. AIR is recommended by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) which is updated yearly. SMART/MART is recommended by both the NHLBI 2020 Guidelines and GINA. But regardless of the existence of national asthma guidelines and global strategy there is suboptimal awareness, adherence, and implementation, which contribute to poor clinical outcomes. This session will provide guidance on implementing AIR and MART into clinical practice.
