ABOVE: Ferrari’s blood-red armada of Testa Rossas – the No. 12 for Pedro Rodriguez and Ludovico Scarfiotti, Olivier Gendebien and Paul Frère’s No. 11, the No. 10 Ginther/Willy Mairesse car and the renumbered-from-Test Days No. 9 of Phil Hill and Wolfgang von Trips. Team manager Romolo Tavoni, with glasses, shirt sleeves and tie and wearing a hat, can be seen talking to someone alongside Ginther’s car. THE REVS INSTITUTE, ALBERT BOCHROCH COLLECTION

OPPOSITE TOP: Parked on a Le Mans street, the No. 20 250 GT California and No. 18 250 GT SWB Berlinetta NART entries for first-timer William ‘Bill’ Sturgis and Jo Schlesser, and George Arents and Le Mans rookie Alan Connell Jr. Sturgis would officially be the last car to retire, when his engine failed in the 22nd hour. Arents and Connell, on the other hand, would finish fifth overall and second in class. TERRY ANDREWS
OPPOSITE BOTTOM: Also on the street outside the Chinetti garage, next to a tiny 750 cc OSCA (note the particularly awkward version of the newly-mandated tall windscreens) is the No. 19 NART SWB Berlinetta of veteran Ed Hugus and Le Mans rookie Augie Pabst. Hugus and Pabst would finish seventh overall, the last of three NART cars in the top ten. TERRY ANDREWS
