Unlike the previous year, when Ferrari had won all ten races prior to Le Mans and elected not to participate, in 1973, the World Manufacturer’s Championship was very much in play, and to answer the challenge from Matra, three 312 PBs were entered at la Sarthe for the fiftieth anniversary of the 24-hour classic. None, unfortunately, by NART, which meant for the second year in a row, no Americans would contend for overall honors.
As before, Luigi Chinetti entered four Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytonas for the GTS Group. Sam Posey would be teamed with Le Mans rookie Milt Minter. Nearing 40, Minter was an innately talented driver and mechanic who had recently finished second overall at Daytona, co-driving a NART GTB/4 with François Migault, and at Sebring, with Michael Keyser, in a Porsche RSR.
Though roughly on a par with Posey in skill, Milt Minter couldn’t have been further apart from his co-driver in terms of
