STRICTLY PRIVATE. Ferrari was back on good terms with the authorities, so NART would
not have to cover for them at the 1965 US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. Nevertheless,
Chinetti decided to enter two private F1 Ferraris. Pedro Rodríguez had the No. 14 Tipo
1512. It finished a commendable if uncompetitive fifth. BILL & GINNY CLOSE COLLECTION /

There had been talks all year about getting Pedro Rodríguez into a Ferrari Formula
One car. Sometimes Chinetti acted as Ferrari’s emissary, but Pedro also talked directly
to Ferrari. As Pedro was about to embark on his fall season, he had driven in only three
Championship F1 races, just one in a Ferrari the previous year, at Mexico.
The first fall race was the Bridgehampton 500 Km, at NART’s unofficial home track.
The NART Ferrari 365 P2 was again assigned to Pedro. He was up against Chaparral,
Lola, McLaren, and Genie chassis all powered by big American V8s. The 315 miles took
their toll, and at the end, only one of the V8 prototypes survived, the Chaparral 2, driven
by Hap Sharp. He was the winner, but Pedro held on for second. George Arents / Bob
Hutchins were 11th overall, 4th in GT III, with the Le Mans GT Class–winning 275 GTB.
Mario Andretti in a NART 275 P (0814) retired.
Next on the schedule was Mosport, where Pedro was again in the 365 P2. There were
even more V8-powered chassis, some driven by Formula One drivers such as Jackie

sidelined half the field, Pedro couldn’t challenge the leaders, ending up third behind Jim
