SUNDAY IN THE PARK – GATHERING OF THE MARQUES
Just after the 2020 Amelia Island Concours slipped under the wire to become the last major car show before the pandemic – thanks to a fortuitous golf tournament date delay – Amelia chairman Bill Warner quipped, “maybe God loves car guys more than he does golfers ....” Several months later, the 2020 Sunday in the Park was one of the few automotive events that remained on the calendar during the pandemic.
For 2021’s event, Steven Harris’ RS collection was joined by three curated Porsche classes, one for 356s, a second for air-cooled 911s and a third for competition Porsches. Among the highlights were Jerry Charlup’s GT-engined 1957 Carrera Speedster, as well as an entirely original 912 that has been in the same family since its original delivery to the US in 1965. At the other end of performance spectrum was Rob Dyson’s 962 racer, a legendary feat of Porsche engineering.
Other special exhibits included “Cars of the Northeast,” a display of local automotive heroes, plus “Alternative Energies” featuring steam and electric cars from the earliest days of the automobile. Joining them was a grouping
of European / American “hybrids” dating from a unique period in the 1960s and 70s where small European manufacturers employed reliable American V8s to create a new class of beautiful and robust sports cars. “Best of Britain” highlighted products that established Britain’s broad capabilities in sports, touring and luxury cars. The “Woodies” class displayed vintage wood-bodied cars that were as at home on ocean beaches as at gracious country estates. Lastly and perhaps most significantly was a class of Grand Prix Greats that included some of the most legendary race cars in history, many of which are still competing on vintage circuits today.
As Sunday participants worked their way around the track, they could
also enjoy The Gathering of the Marques, an extensive display of hundreds
of classic and sports cars, arranged by club or by brand, along with their enthusiast owners. Though light rain threatened during the day, nothing could dampen the spirits of fans that came to the track on Sunday.
