My great uncle Ozro Mitchell came to California in the middle 1850’s with his brother, my great grandfa- ther Adolphus. Together they created their cattle ranch and farm, southwest of Visalia.
While my grandfather married and raised his fam- ily on the ranch, Ozro never married and I feel was quite lonely for it. His sister Amanda married John Roseberry and remained in Missouri to raise her fam- ily. Her Brother in law, Robert Roseberry came west and settled in the San Francisco vicinity and began his family.
This letter to Charlotte Roseberry, his niece by Amanda, is to inform her of the disastrous earthquake in San Francisco. The reference to Bob is to Charlotte’s uncle, of who, it was hoped at the time, was safe.
Ozro was very close to the Roseberry family in San Francisco. As he grew older spending months at a time in the City and less time ranching.
