ON THE FARM
DEARBHLA CONNELL
U6
I had previously only worked on pig farms,
but Peter Brown took an afternoon out of
his busy schedule to take me around the rest of the farm, explaining the different areas of enterprise, from beef cattle to forestry, and I found it hugely exciting to witness the diversity of activity on just one farm.
I was pleased to be able to discuss the day- to-day running of the pig unit with Justin, the manager, and learn about his experience of a variety of management strategies, and the difficulties and benefits of these. As I had previous experience of outdoor pig units,
I relished the opportunity to work indoors
and come to my own conclusions on the merits of each system. This has perhaps been my favourite part of my experience as I’ve gained valuable insight into the diversity and complexity of this huge industry
Something I’ve had to come to terms with
very quickly whilst doing work experience is the harsh reality of farm life. Whilst I never had a rose-tinted view of the agriculture industry,
it can still be difficult to accept that tough decisions may have to be made if animals are ill, or if an area of the business is unprofitable. The team on Jane’s farm not only made sure I was well supported if it had been a difficult day,
but also that I was well informed. Developing my understanding of how the business works and the challenges they face was a real highlight of my time there.
Come rain or shine, I think I’ve found the place I feel most at home; surrounded by fields, barns, animals, and others who share my passion for agriculture and the countryside.
