we blink, does the mind command it  rst? If there is no command, see whether they will blink? Ah! Even without the mind’s commanding, the eyes still blink. In fact, this is because we do not see that the mind has already made its command. This is because, sometimes the mind does not command in the form of languages.
The mind will command that it is beginning to feel intolerable. The wind is hitting and burning the eyes; the eyes are becoming dry, becoming uncomfortable. We feel that we need to blink so that the eyes will not dry up; we feel momentarily before blinking. This is the mind commanding the physical body to protect itself. This is tonjit or the initial mind or the thought process (vithicitta). The working process of the mind that we sometimes cannot see. We only think that they (Translator’s note: The eyes) do things instinctively. But, what is the instinct that makes the command? It is the mind. When we say that they do things by instinct, not because of intention, not because of wisdom—are we saying this is due to habits?
In reality, when we observe the initial mind this way, a type of wisdom emerges. Practitioners should observe this: When we see the mind making the command before we shift, before we blink, before we move, before we open our mouth. When we see the mind becomes aware  rst, aware  rst, aware  rst; making the command  rst—how does the mind feel? How does the mindfulness feel?
