Residents at Legacy Village of Castle Pines hosted a bingo tournament over the summer for fun and fellowship, but mostly for a worthy cause. Held in July, “Bingo Bonanza” raised more than $2,000 for
the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” which took place on September 18 at Denver City Park.
Jamie Agnew, Legacy Village’s life enrichment director, successfully initiated a bingo tournament at a former community facility and is continuing her passion to help those who struggle with the disease.
“I started Bingo Bonanza at Legacy Village because I know that almost all of our residents love bingo, and we strive to raise as much money as we can to help fight this horrible battle,” she said.
Fifty residents plus 10 family members participated in the tournament. Agnew assembled a gift basket with prizes and gift cards donated from community businesses. Margaretta Danielewicz was the Bingo Bonanza winner.
Agnew noted that in the past, Legacy Village residents have also raised money and gathered toys for the Toys for Tots program. Because of the pandemic, they were restricted and could not fundraise within the last 18 months. The Bingo Bonanza is hopefully a jumpstart for Legacy to become more active again in giving back to the community, she said.
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that affects thinking, memory and behavior. According to the Alzheimer Association, more than six million people in the U.S. live with the fatal disease. September is internationally recognized as Alzheimer’s awareness month.
“Bingo Bonanza is a way for all of us to come together, enjoy the game and each other’s company while at the same time helping a very good cause,” added Agnew.
A second bingo tournament is scheduled for Saturday, November 20. If you want to learn more about the event or make a donation, email Jamie Agnew at jamiea@ wslm.biz.
