Outcome Ideas The assembly of global leaders from arts and culture at Culture Summit Abu Dhabi 2019 led to new ideas across intellectual disciplines and geographical boundaries. Three outcome ideas that emerged have proven timely and critical. They not only support cultural institutions but widen the scope for participation of audiences and deepen the availability of expertise to address emerging issues. The summit resulted in a consensus that globalisation and rapid technological advancement converge to provide new opportunities. All of the three outcome ideas reflect that convergence. The first outcome idea is that Culture Summit Abu Dhabi will launch an initiative to research and prototype Virtual Reality technology in reimagining opportunities to see, experience and learn about museum collections. This outcome is predicated on the meteoric rise of digital technology, an evolving definition of culture and shifting expectations from new audiences. Coupled with this, the panels curated by the Guggenheim at the summit resulted in intense discussions about historical and cultural artefacts from the non-western world held within western museums. This led to a proposal that while debates continue over the issue of ‘repatriation’, the creation of ‘virtual museums’ through digital technology could be an interim measure. This project originated from discussions between Nigerian artist Emeka Ogboh, Wanda Nanibush, Curator of Indigenous Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada, and Alexandra Munroe, Samsung Senior Curator, Asian Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, among others. It will focus on the historical and cultural heritage of Africa and indigenous North America and seek to connect these communities to their own cultural objects/belongings, to reduce generational disconnect.
