For CILT, our aim is to continue to grow the network throughout 2017. In order to attract new members, and help them see for themselves the benefits of the Skillnet programme, we offer free trial workshops and seminars. We are committed to helping companies increase outputs from their training budgets and so have adopted a flexible approach when it comes to assisting them with their training needs. It means that if a company is looking for a particular kind of training that isn’t offered by CILT Skillnet we will work to create a new module that will address this.
CILT Skillnet courses begin with our members and their needs and so therefore we look to them for suggestions for the type of training they want. This was the case with our Good Distribution Practice course which wasn’t originally part of our Skillnet programme but was developed specifically for a network member. Initially designed to upskill staff in the handling of medical products, the network member wanted it to meet the needs of staff across many areas of their business, from warehouse and administration to drivers and managers, and so a broad spectrum course was created. Our Good Distribution Practice programme is scheduled to run in May and will train 90 staff.
Just as members of CILT Skillnet can come together to share training courses and reduce costs, it is also possible to collaborate with other companies to request a course that meets each of your individual requirements. As a result, not only do members get training tailored specifically for their needs but they also determine how, where and when it should be delivered.
The Skillnets flexible training model has many benefits – staff can participate in relevant, specialised programmes which increase their long-term career opportunities and employability while a company’s competitiveness is boosted and there is greater opportunity to network with others in the industry.
In addition to tailored training, CILT are continually developing new courses to meet industry needs. One area we are currently focusing on is‘train the trainer’programmes, whereby companies can learn how to carry out specialised training themselves. Our ECOdrive Fuel Efficient Train the Trainer course, developed by Conor Molloy’s Authentic Energy Management Services, is one such example.
ECOdrive is a new style of driving a vehicle which is designed to take advantage of modern engine technologies and to help drivers handle their vehicle more efficiently. The programme is configured to suit the individual company’s operation and those that participate receive tailored training materials specific to their business as well as targeted coaching and communication skills. The objective of our ECOdrive Train the Trainer course is that the participant will have the skills and knowledge to include elements of ECOdriving in not just their driving instruction but also in CPC and other classroom training.
The course is suited to companies who feel fuel costs are eating into their profits. ECOdriving can deliver sustained savings of 5-10% in L/100km, so if a company can save 10,000 litres of fuel a year, for example, that means they can add up to €10,000- €12,000 on their bottom line. A company can also reduce its carbon footprint by 1 tonne by decreasing its fuel by 380 litres per year. Those that complete the course will be able to motivate drivers to improve their fuel performance and help to reduce
wear and tear on company vehicles, which, in turn, leads to higher residual values and better cost efficiency.
CILT Skillnet will be one year old this September and we are focused on growing our network substantially to provide even greater opportunities and savings for our members. For us the mission is clear, training is a vital strategic tool for the continued success of individual businesses but also our industry as a whole. By continuing to identify skill gaps and providing the training to address them we can ensure our industry not only survives but thrives.

A one day classroom-based course, it is suitable for a maximum of 16 people.
Collision Investigation Reporting
Ensures participants have the skills and techniques needed for successful identification, recording and reporting of a collision or incident. Particularly suited to transport and safety managers, course attendees study the cause of collisions and how to put systems in place to prevent them.
Secure Loads, Safe Loading/Unloading IRU Certification
