Ireland is the only island nation in Europe and this comes with its unique challenges with it comes to Supply Chain Management. As a multi-national export hub and being predominantly dependent on air and marine transport we have to work even harder at making that supply chain process ef cient and cost-effective. The Freight Transport, Distribution and Logistics (FTDL) sector is of strategic and operational importance for business within Ireland. It is one which was outlined at the recent launch of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs report on ‘Addressing the Demand for Skills in the FTDL sector in Ireland’. The key aim of this report is to ensure the sector will have the quality and quantity of skills to meet the challenges and opportunities identi ed up to 2020. Supply chain management (SCM) and logistics are critical success factors as Ireland continues to build an export- driven economic recovery. Provisional gures shown recently from the Central Statistics Of ce (CSO) show seasonally adjusted exports for April rose by ∑989 million (12 per cent) to ∑9.3 billion.
Many Irish companies are identifying the need to up-skill their Supply Chain Personnel to a level where their staff are exceptionally well-trained, multi-skilled professionals and completely up to date with best practices in the industry both at national and international levels. The National Institute for Transport and Logistics (NITL) Centre of Excellence at Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT ) has successfully delivered an Executive Masters in Supply Chain Management (DT352) since the late 90s and has contributed greatly to upskilling hundreds of graduates over this period working in sectors such as Coco Cola, Tesco, Pepsico, Musgraves, Lillys, DHL, and Irish Rail. The aim of the programme is to develop the leaders of change and business improvement in all sizes and types of companies and is particularly suitable for logistics and/or transport personnel who require exible learning to t around their work commitments. Its unique delivery provides work/study exibility and an ideal opportunity for graduates from a wide variety of disciplines to acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and competencies to build a career in this exciting and rapidly developing eld.
