the Shipping and Transport industry – first with Bell Lines Ltd., as National Transport Operations Manager, subsequently with Port of Cork as Container Terminal Operations Manager. He has worked on projects with the United Nations Conference of Training and Development and the European Commission Transport Directorate.
He has an in depth knowledge of Port Operations & Management. In addition, he has a strategic insight regarding port development from infrastructure, process improvement and ICT perspective which has supported the development of the greater Cork harbour operations.
Gerard is a very keen supporter of training and personal development. He has always made great efforts to pass on his knowledge and experience to fellow CILT members, the shipping industry in Ireland and worldwide through his connections with the United Nations.
His first overseas project was to Nigeria in 1976 to conduct an assessment of the port facilities in Lagos. Since then, he has visited many other African countries to help build capability in all aspects of port operations. He has also travelled to the Far East and has just returned from his latest mission to Manila in the Philippines.
As an independent business advisor & service provider, he now provides ship agency and management service, freight forwarding and logistics solutions, ship port and transport management solutions and project evaluation, management and review services.
He has recently been engaged in the evaluation and review of an EU funded Maritime project for the exchange of information between the stakeholders in international movement of cargo by sea and road.
Noel Bishop was recognised for his long service to CILT as a member for over 51 years. Noel joined the Institute of Transport, as it was at the time, in 1965 and worked in B&I Line as a shipping clerk until its closure. He has been a stalwart and tireless servant of the Southern Section, CILT and our business sector throughout the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and into this millennium. Grainne Lynch, Southern Section Chairperson, who presented Noel’s citation referred to the importance of growing and maintaining professional relationships and supporting personal development and acknowledged Noel’s enormous contribution in this regard.
The ceremony was closed by CILT President, Paddy Doherty who offered a vote of thanks to all involved.
