The Ādam Paradox Hypothesis 5
The Third Strand: Fire That Never Went Out
Then, sometime after 70,000 years ago, everything changed. The silence ended
in what archaeologists call the Cognitive Revolution.
In Europe, the Aurignacian culture (~43 kya) produced bone flutes, ivory
figurines, and elaborate ornaments (Conard, 2009). In France’s Chauvet
Cave (~35 kya), walls explode with lifelike depictions of horses, lions, and
mammoths in motion (Clottes, 2003). In Sulawesi, Indonesia (~45 kya),
cave walls bear hand stencils and painted animals (Aubert et al., 2014).
Burials across Eurasia are filled with ochre, beads, and grave goods. Long-
distance trade in obsidian, shells, and pigments connected communities over
hundreds of kilometers (Mellars, 2006).
This time, the fire spread and never receded. Symbolism became permanent,
cumulative, and universal.

Anatomy vs. Cognition Scales
Line 1: Anatomical modernity (steady rise, plateau ~200 kya).
Line 2: Cognition (flat for 200,000 years, then sharp ignition ~70 kya).
