The local Zulus called it eThekwini, the lagoon. A thriving trading post grew around the bay, becoming the third largest city in South Africa.
Durban harbour is the busiest port in Africa and the largest container port in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the hub of exotic trade, travel and adventure and for centuries it has been the gateway to South Africa. A safe haven for ships since its first recorded discovery on Christmas Day 1497 by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, this huge sheltered bay became a regular port of call.
