INTERVENTIONS UNDERTAKEN AND ACHIEVEMENTS DURING LOCKDOWN
The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic posed a risk to the homeless population, as many are infected by communicable diseases due to various factors including poor hygiene, exposure to rough weather conditions and lack of nutrition. In addition the homeless, most of whom are substance abusers, infected with HIV and TB and congregate around the city were themselves at risk of contracting the virus or could themselves pose a risk to the residents due to their unlimited exposure if they were not confined to shelters as part of lockdown. Unfortunately, the lockdown measures also increased the incidents of gender based violence whilst other forms of crimes were reduced. These therefore necessitated interventions that were earmarked to reduce the impact of corona virus to the homeless population and the residents at large.
