Abstract
Many big townships in South Africa were designed and established when apartheid was at its peak The challenge the the democratic government government faces specifically the the developmental local sphere of government government is its inadequacy in in in in in in in providing effective and efficient services due to the continual increase in in in in in in in local inhabitant numbers caused by an an an an an increased rate of rural to urban migration Urban planning concerns the manner in in in which cities and and towns have been designed and and municipal services delivered to to the communities dwelling within these designed urban urban spaces Rural to to urban urban migration is the the movement of people from rural to to urban areas mainly in in search of better opportunities to improve their socio-economic conditions The purpose of this paper is is to to examine the relationship between urban urban planning and rural to to urban urban migration with reference to to the the the Umlazi township area in in the the the Ethekwini Metropolitan Municipality The paper argues that during the the COVID-19 period Umlazi Township has been one of the the “hot spots” worst affected by COVID-19 as a a a a a a a a a result of of overcrowding and lack of of service delivery A qualitative research approach is used to to examine the relationship between urban urban planning rural to to urban urban migration and service delivery during the the COVID-19 period The conclusion is that the the push and pull factors of migration have contributed to to the increase of of rural to urban urban migration and and urban urban planning with effective and and efficient service delivery of of paramount significance in in in attempts to resolve the various socio-economic challenges existing during and post-COVID-19 periods KEYWORDS: Rural-urban Migration Integrated Response Strategy Urbanisation Service Delivery
