MAKING A BIRD
Doves are a universal symbol of peace and make for a great reminder of peace and unity, hence ornithology is one of our core research departments.
Ingredients
• White and black paper
• Chopsticks
• White cotton wool balls
• Googly eyes
• Glue
Directions
1. Draw a large circle on white paper. The circle should have a diameter the size of the chopstick or slightly larger, if necessary. Cut out the circle.
2. Glue the chopstick on the circle so that it divides the circle into equal halves. Set it aside to dry.
3. Once the circle has dried, fold the halves of the circle together. This is the body of the bird.
4. Glue the tops of the halves together so that the chopstick rests on the inside of the folded circle – the stick will be the
bird’s back.
5. On a separate piece of white paper, trace your hands on the white paper and cut them out. These are the wings of your
bird. You should have two hands cut out for the two wings of the dove.
6. From any of the waste paper, cut out a triangle that’s 3⁄4 the length of the chopstick.
7. Turn the half circle so that the round part is facing down and the flat part is on top, creating the bird’s back. Glue the
wings to the body of the bird near the centre on top of the flat part where the chopstick is located. Make sure that you
only glue near the wrist part of the hand so that the rest of the wing is free to move.
8. Glue the cotton wool ball to one end of the chopstick for the head and glue a triangle of white paper to the other end
of the chopstick for a tail. The triangle should be about 3⁄4 the length of a chopstick. Set aside your bird to dry.
9. Glue googly eyes to the bird’s head.
10. Cut a small triangle from the black paper for a beak and glue it beneath the eyes. Let it dry.
11. Use scissors to cut small slits and fray the paper on the ends of the wings and tail to give it a more feather-like feel.
Ingredients
• 2 cups cooked chow mein noodles
• 2 cups crushed conflake cereal
• Baking chocolate
• Chocolate eggs sweets/whispers/chocolate coated raisins
Directions
1. Place a sheet of baking paper or foil on a large cookie tray. In a large bowl, combine the noodles and the cereal and set aside.
2. Melt chocolate in a double boiler over hot water (or in the microwave). Remove from heat and pour over noodles and cereal.
3. To form nests, mound 2 tablespoons of the mixture onto the prepared cookie tray. With the back of a teaspoon, make a dimple in the centre of each mound. Press three or four sweets/chocolates in the center of each ‘nest’. Allow to set at room temperature until firm.
