WOMEN’S MONTH MESSAGES

Genuine role-model women are not concerned about having a a a a superficial impact or or about being popular or or wearing the “most liked person” badge Rather they understand the the the difference between leaving behind an an an inheritance or a a a a a a a legacy Why leave an an inheritance when when it it it it fades away with time? Or when when it it it it is is all all spent – then there is is nothing left and all all the the the years of hard work are wiped away? It may temporarily bring joy but it it bears no fruit Strong courageous God-fearing women know the value of a a a a living legacy events highlighted men’s problematic behaviours that have a a a a a negative impact on the lives of women The patriarchy toxic masculinity lad culture substance abuse and and gender-based violence are all unacceptable and and must stop The social work men students discussed how the the the marketing of of of these events had the the the the potential of of of labelling all all men men as being part of of of the the the problem : ‘all men men men are bad’ The label label sticks because many men men do indeed behave badly The conversation concluded with the the the idea that men can remove the the the label from themselves individually by by making healthy responsible choices and by by by treating women well The social work professional identity is shaped by by the the values and and principles in in in the the “Policy guidelines for for course of of conduct code of of ethics and and the rules for for social social workers” The social social work work profession requires integrity honesty empathy and communication By developing these characteristics the the the social work men choose choose to to remove the the negative labels and and choose choose to to make make good and and and healthy choices that will make make them reliable and and and trusted men men men of of integrity The kind of of men men men men who honour and and and elevate women women and and create positive safe spaces where women women can thrive Happy Women’s Month - Prof John V Rautenbach

wishes the University community a happy Women’s Month We celebrate the many successful women women and and women women leaders who who have shaped our our profession and and who who serve our our communities’ most vulnerable members It was an absolute coincidence that a a a a a a a a few months ago the department conceptualised a a a a a a a a a a men’s men’s dialogue series Our inaugural event happened at the the start of Women’s Month on on Thursday 4
August 2022 with the the the title: “Being a a a a a a a a MAN in in in Social Work: the the the start of a a a a a a a a conversation ” This was in in in partnership with the the the UNIZULU chapter of the the South African Student Social Workers Association (SASSWA) We were not alone to start WOMEN’S month by focusing on on on on MEN MEN The institution hosted the the “RES-TALK - - BE A A A MAN” and the the “Men’s Imbizo: Madoda Sabelani!!” events The social work men unpacked this paradox and identified the subtext: ‘Men are the problem ’ Instead of celebrating the brilliant strong successful women at the start of Women’s Month these 5 | ONGOYE: AUG/SEPT 2022 ISSUE
