 Pretty Dlamini, SHEQ Co-ordinator
In late 2009, SAPREF got its first female senior operator on a process unit. Pretty Dlamini started her career at SAPREF as a refinery trainee in 2004, and in 2009 passed her senior test and was operating the Cat Cracker panel on her own.
How did she do it? Said Pretty, “I think it’s
a combination of factors including ambition, having the right support and of course hard work. By support I mean your team must support you, especially your team leader, and the day assistant. A high calibre senior person to mentor you is also essential.”
Lofty van der Bent, Senior Process
Technician
“Of course, you don’t stay at a company for nearly 25 years if it is not a good company to work for. But apart from that, I like the challenges that the job throws up every day ... Visbreaker is always intensive, Solvents is always busy, and then the time flies. I find the work stimulating and enjoy having to pay attention to detail — it keeps me on my toes and wide awake.”
