“Finding the right priorities
for urgent action, defining the strategies and contributing to the improvement journey are highly motivating work.
– Rod”ney Youldon
The Commercial department is responsible for the Single Buoy Mooring off Reunion Rocks where about 85% of South Africa’s crude oil is imported. The SBM is operated by a SAPREF contractor.
Commercial
The Commercial department includes Marine, Technical Auditing, Business Improvement, Performance Review, Margin Growth, LP Modelling, Economics and Scheduling, Hydrocarbon Accounting, and the Durban Dig-out Port (DDOP) Project.
The Commercial department is relatively new, having been created following the reorganisation of Leadership Team responsibilities in 2011. The department of 32 people was launched early in 2012.
Rodney Youldon, Commercial Manager, outlines some of the challenges: “From Solomon benchmarking, SAPREF is a
mostly fourth-quartile refinery needing significant improvement in many areas to be internationally competitive and thus assured of a long-term future. This is a challenge but also an exciting journey to be part of. Finding the right priorities for urgent action, defining the strategies and contributing to the improvement journey are highly motivating work.
“This longer-term vision and view of company performance is counter-balanced
by the highs and lows of daily refinery performance and the obligation to deliver on the product supply and margin commitments to our shareholders. Other on-going challenges are managing the SBM, its strategic national importance and the impact that this has on SAPREF’s reputation, and the impact the DDOP has on the SBM and the refinery.”
