“Highlights for my team are the many staff who take the time to
say ‘thank you’ – whether it’s for something as simple as an address change, through to assistance in negotiating the often emotional path towards retirement. ”

benefits and human resources administration. The team ensures that salaries, allowances
and benefits are benchmarked and competitive. They administer payments to third-party benefits providers such as provident funds, medical aid, vehicle finance and insurance,
and addresses employees’ queries around pay, benefits and policies. The section also maintains all employee master data and ensures that any changes are processed and documented efficiently.
Managing pay and benefits in a way that balances affordability, competitiveness, reward for performance and future sustainability is challenging. However, day-to-day challenges are more operational in nature and are normally related to deadlines — pay days and tax submissions come around very quickly,
and are cast in stone. The team is constantly interrogating processes, looking for ways to become quicker, more efficient and accurate in meeting those deadlines.
Says Des Ayliffe, Remuneration and Benefits Manager: “Highlights for my team are the many staff who take the time to say ‘thank- you’ ― whether it’s for something as simple
as an address change, through to assistance in
negotiating the often emotional path towards retirement.”
Talent Management
The key responsibility of this section is looking after the attraction, development and retention of SAPREF staff. It ensures that all talent management processes are integrated. The team supports line managers in managing our talent deliberately and consciously, creating a great place to work for our employees. This entails focused recruitment and selection, succession and workforce planning, talent reviews and effecting the necessary changes and ensuring development and exposure takes place. Diversity and inclusion is also a continuous drive for us as we create an engaging environment.
The team also attracts and grows talent from high school and university levels, supporting and sponsoring maths and science education in our Saturday Schools and ensuring our bursars have all the necessary support to obtain their qualifications to eventually be placed at SAPREF as future leaders.
