INTRODUCTION
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT is a vital component of the Durban University of Technology (DUT), serving as a dynamic platform for discovering and nurturing talent while empowering both staff and students to give back to their communities. This engagement fosters connections that provide access to resources and opportunities that may have previously been out of reach, aligning seamlessly with the goals of ENVISION2030.
As a strategic long-term investment, community engagement initiatives significantly impact the lives of participants. Many beneficiaries of our school engagement programmes undergo transformative changes and often view DUT as their preferred choice for higher education. Their enrolment reflects the successful circularity of our efforts, contributing to a cohort of graduates committed to enhancing societal well-being.
The Community Engagement Showcase Pitching and Excellence (CE SPE) Awards at DUT celebrate the remarkable achievements of individuals and teams dedicated to creating positive community impact. Organised by the Community Engagement
Office under the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research Innovation and Engagement (DVC: RIE), these awards honour outstanding projects that exemplify commitment, creativity, and collaboration.
By bringing together staff and students from across all DUT six faculties and support units, the CE SPE Awards cultivate a spirit of inspiration and learning, showcasing the transformative power of community engagement. The primary objectives of these awards are to highlight exemplary initiatives, promote excellence in service learning and community engagement, and encourage the sharing of best practices among the DUT community and its stakeholders.
This report showcases the projects selected for the CE SPE Awards in 2022, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of all staff, students, and social partners. As we celebrate these achievements, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and making a lasting difference in the lives of those we serve, fully in line with the aspirations of ENVISION2030.
