The CRT is primarily comprised of Infrastructure and Operations Department employees, and specific individuals in various university buildings. This includes but is not limited to:
1) Protective Services Department
2) Building Maintenance
3) Building plans and campus space management
4) Electrical section
5) Engineering section
6) Grounds and Gardens
7) Information Communications Technology
6.2.1 Incident Manager
The Incident Manager will direct and coordinate specific campus-wide response activities and campus support operations during a major disaster or disaster. In his/her absence, the Manager: PSD/Manager: SHE will serve as Incident Manager.
Depending on the type of disaster or disaster, the Incident Manager will direct appropriate UNIZULU employees to assist the SA Police Services, Umhlathuze Municipality Fire Department, and Department of Health (ambulances) during and/or after the disaster.
6.2.2 Key Critical Response Team Members
As members of the CRT, individuals in the ICT Division, SHE, Managers of the PSD, Electrical, Building Maintenance, Engineering, and Grounds and Gardens sections, and other key role-players report to the Incident Manager and assist outside disaster response services as follows:
1) Provide practical assistance and direction at the scene of the disaster.
2) Provide technical information regarding management of university buildings and facilities.
3) Provide technical knowledge about university infrastructure, e.g., blueprint information, HVAC (High voltage alternating current) information, wiring information.
4) Provide access to floor plans that indicate
the location of passages, exits, windows, fire extinguishers, alarms, sprinklers, smoke detectors and water mains, as well as controls for electricity, water, heating, ventilation, etc.
5) Floor plans should also provide information on the location of hazardous chemicals and flammable materials.
6.2.3 Safety Health and Environment (SHE) Office
The responsibilities of the SHE Office are as follows:
1) Maintain an up-to-date list of names, titles and
phone numbers of designated Building Disaster Coordinators and Assistants to the CRT and notifying them of any changes that occur after their designation.
2) Provide support, as required, to the CRT.
3) In accordance with section 24 of the Occupational
Health and Safety (OHS) Act, ensure that any major incident is reported to a Department of Employment and Labour inspector within seven days.
6.2.4 Critical Response Team Support
Several university employees also play a role as the support arm of the CRT, including:
1) Managers / Heads of Departments
2) Emergency Coordinators
3) Emergency Coordinator assistants (also known as a ‘floor marshals’, ‘floor monitors’ or ‘incident officers’)
4) Elementary fire fighters
5) First aiders
6) Clinic employees
7) Guidance and Counselling/Employee Health and
Wellness employees
8) Communications and Marketing Division
6.2.5 Managers/Heads of Departments
Every HOD, in collaboration with or on behalf of their respective Dean, has the following general responsibilities:

Appoint an Emergency Coordinator for every building in which his/her department is operational, and Emergency Coordinator assistants (also known as ‘floor marshals’, ‘floor monitors’ or ‘incident officers’) for each floor or area of the building.
Work with the Emergency Coordinator to develop building-specific evacuation guidelines (drawing on the FIRE-GEAR evacuation template) and designated primary and alternative Disaster APs.
Provide the SHE Unit with the names, titles, and phone numbers of their designated Disaster Response Support Employees (Building Disaster Coordinators and assistants; first aiders; elementary
