6.3.5 Incoming Telephone Calls
Several university offices are likely to receive calls enquiring about the status of an emergency or disaster on our campuses.
These offices should be made aware of the DMP and familiarised with any updates. They should also be informed in the event of any disaster, and be sent copies of any communications or statements from the Director of Communications and Marketing.

Two categories of evacuation are considered: Building evacuation procedures and Campus evacuation procedures.
6.4.1 Building Evacuation
Building evacuation is required when it is no longer safe or potentially unsafe to remain inside a building. The procedure would be based on the FIRE-GEAR evacuation template below, and would take place as follows:
1) Evacuation will occur when the fire alarm sounds and/or notification is received by the PSD, the relevant Emergency Coordinator, Umhlathuze Municipality Fire Department, or the SA Police Services.
2) Occupants must leave the building by the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.
3) Individuals with mobility, hearing or sight challenges should be assisted in exiting the building.
4) Lifts should not be used to evacuate the building. Diagrams showing evacuation routes should be mounted on the passage walls on each floor.
5) Once outside the building, individuals should proceed to the designated AP.
6) Streets, fire lanes, hydrants, and walkways should be kept clear for disaster vehicles and employees.
7) The relevant Emergency Coordinator will take a roll call at the designated AP to check if all occupants have exited the building.
6.4.2 Campus Evacuation
1) Announcement of a campus-wide evacuation would come from the VC.
2) Occupants must leave the building by the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.
3) Move off campus.
4) Once the emergency or disaster has passed,
occupants shall be recalled; they will be asked to return to their place of work and await further instructions.
6.4.3 FIRE-GEAR Evacuation Template
Managers or HODs in all buildings on campus should work with their Emergency Coordinators to use the FIRE-GEAR evacuation template to develop a building-specific disaster evacuation procedure, which should be on all notice boards.
Details of the Emergency Coordinator and assistants should also be placed on all notice boards.
