Hit the waves
The Umhlanga area has some powerful waves, and the best surf spots are at Umhlanga Main Beach, Umdloti and Westbrook. The waves at Umdloti and Umhlanga are classic beach breaks that work on any size swell from two to six foot. Westbrook is a fickle right-hander that breaks along a shelf of rocks. All these spots work on light offshore winds, and conditions are best in winter (between April and August), especially in the early morning when the land breeze blows. There are loads of surf shops in the area where you can buy all the gear and find out about lessons for beginners. When the surf’s not great, the Wave House at Gateway has standing waves suitable for newbies and advanced surfers.
Durban’s iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium
A visit to the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, just 15 minutes south of Umhlanga, is a must-do. This incredible facility was a key stadium during the 2010 Soccer World Cup and hosted a semi-final. Visitors can take the SkyCar to a viewing platform on the top of the iconic arch 106 metres above the pitch for a 360o degree view.
For the brave visitor, the Big Swing is the largest swing of any kind in the world. Jump into the void and swing out in a huge 220-metre arc under the arch.
