1.1 The University will ensure inclusive learning spaces, diversified workplaces, and hospitable environments across its campuses
Human Rights programmes and campaigns
Workshops on diversity, social justice and gender-based violence continue to engage staff and students
Transformation Charter/climate statement
The University’s Transformation Charter was presented and approved by MANCO and the Transformation Committee. It has been translated to IsiZulu and printed for display in all critical areas of the University
Employment of student voice in transformation more productively
The Transformation Office partners with faculties and other programmes like CSIRD to engage students in transformation
1.2 The University will develop and implement innovative and cross-cutting programmes to improve the institutional climate for diverse students, staff and visitors
Faculty-based initiatives linked to UNIZULU 101 or other programmes (academics and students)
Development of UNIZULU 101 programme was completed in 2019. The rollout began with first-year students in 2020. Despite student protests and COVID-19 challenges, the programme continues to be rolled out via Moodle
Coherent programme for campus- wide social-intellectual activities (bringing things together)
1.3 The University will implement the new Language Policy
Institutionalisation of the Language Policy
A Language Policy Implementation Plan has been developed. Sections of it are being implemented via different structures of the University
1.4 The University will establish an institutional mechanism to deal with cases of discrimination and harassment
Review the University Anti- discrimination policy
The Anti-Discrimination policy has been reviewed. It is currently going through approval structures
A Gender and Inclusivity Policy has also been developed. It is also going through structures for approval
Establish a clear coordination of University transformation programmes
1.5 The University will put
in place a public debate and societal engagement programme
Establish a gender forum and a programme of engagement
The forum was operating from 2019, however, a new proposal was made by members, which is subject to management approval
Develop and implement student debate and engagement programme to promote critical citizenship
Students were engaged via faculties on cultural diversity, and social justice. However, a Moodle platform has been set up to engage students on democracy and responsible citizenship
Host the Beyers Naude Memorial Annual Lecture

2.3 The University’s executive management will coordinate and support transformational leadership on campuses, faculties, departments and the various academic, support and business units
Develop an Ombudsman Office
The University has taken a decision not to establish an Ombudsman Office. However, this came out as a recommendation from SAHRC in the Social Justice Lecture
Develop mechanisms/systems to address cases of racism, sexism, sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination
The Gender Equality and Inclusivity policy together with the Anti- discrimination Policy has addressed this. Programmes to handle complaints and awareness will be done subject to the approval of both these policies
Engagement with the Commission for Gender Equality
The Student Services Department has drafted a policy on Student Disability that is going through structures for approval. The policy looks at both academic and university life inclusion in terms of students with disabilities. Policy on Student Housing is also being developed
The Commission for Gender Equality continues to monitor the University’s compliance in terms of recommendations made in the 2018 investigations
