Umlazi Township Tourism
Umlazi is a township on the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, located southwest of Durban. It lies along the south bank of the Mlazi River, hence its name of Umlazi. Umlazi Township Tourism CTO is made up of Umlazi and Lamontville Township up to the rural area called eNgonyameni, which stretches inland along eZimbokodweni River.
According to the legends, the word ‘Umlazi’ is derived from ‘Umlaza’ which is the sour acid produced from a fermented or sour milk. It is believed that when King Shaka was passing through the area, he refused to drink from a local river claiming it had a taste of umlaza. The place was then called Umlazi after that incident
Umlazi is also a home to iconic people like Griffiths and Victoria Mxenge, and others. Over the recent years it has also become a home of the South African creative industry, with the new generation of visual artists, fashion designers, stylists, dancers, actors, and musicians. That
has transformed its position into becoming an events destination, as well.
